Architecture as Pedagogy

In this session, we were joined by Dr Shaikhah Ali Alsahli and Dr Ali Javid as speakers, and Dr Mark Olweny as a respondent. Dr. Alsahli is an Assistant Professor at Kuwait University and holds a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. Her talk titled ‘Shifting Boundaries: Architectural Knowledge and Modernity in 19th Century Cairo’ traced how architectural knowledge transformed from the traditional artisan apprenticeship training system in madrasa and craft guilds to the rise of modern education of architects and engineers in the Arabic context. Dr. Javid, who is based in Syndey, Australia, discussed his recent book ‘The Politics of Architectural Pedagogy in Iran: From Pedagogical Revolution to Revolutionary Pedagogy (1960-1990)’. His research provides valuable insights into the intersection of architectural education and broader socio-political shifts in Iran. Dr. Olweny, who is currently a Visiting Associate Professor at Auburn University and a noted scholar in the field of architecture pedagogy in East Africa, and served as the respondent.
